Tallow is rendered beef fat, traditionally used for generations in skincare and soap making. We use 100% grass-fed tallow because it creates rich, nourishing products that are deeply moisturizing and beautifully compatible with the skin. Tallow contains naturally occurring fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins that help support the skin barrier while leaving skin soft and conditioned — without the need for complicated synthetic ingredients.
At Garden & Sword Apothecary, we believe in returning to simple, time-tested ingredients that have been used long before modern skincare became overly complicated.

Yes — every product is handcrafted in small batches right here in our home apothecary. From rendering and blending to pouring, labeling, and packaging, each step is done with care and intention.
Small batch production allows us to maintain quality, freshness, and attention to detail while creating products that feel personal rather than mass produced. Because our products are handmade, slight variations in texture, color, or appearance are natural and part of what makes each batch unique.

We believe simple is often better. Many conventional products contain synthetic fragrances, fillers, dyes, and preservatives that can be harsh or unnecessary for everyday care. Our approach is rooted in using purposeful ingredients inspired by nature and traditional apothecary practices.
We primarily scent our products with essential oils and botanical ingredients, creating blends that feel grounded, comforting, and intentional rather than overpowering. Our goal is to create products that support daily care while honoring the goodness of what God has provided in creation.

Many customers with dry or sensitive skin enjoy our products because of their simple ingredient lists and nourishing base oils. We intentionally formulate with ingredients like grass-fed tallow, olive oil, calendula-infused oils, and other traditional skin-supportive ingredients.
That said, every person’s skin is different. We always recommend patch testing first, especially if you have allergies, sensitivities, or highly reactive skin. Unscented options are often a great starting place for those with very sensitive skin.

We thoughtfully choose herbs and botanical ingredients not only for their beauty, but for the traditional qualities they’ve been valued for over generations. Many of the plants we use have a long history in apothecary and skincare practices.
Some of our favorite ingredients include:
Calendula – Traditionally used to support and soothe dry or delicate skin. Often infused into oils for gentle skin care preparations.
Lavender – Loved for its calming aroma and timeless use in relaxing body care products.
Peppermint – Creates a fresh, cooling sensation and an invigorating scent experience.
Rosemary – Traditionally appreciated for its herbal, clarifying aroma and use in cleansing products.
Comfrey – Historically nicknamed “knitbone” and valued in traditional herbal practices for skin-supportive preparations.
Oats & Colloidal Oatmeal – Used to create a gentle, comforting feel in soaps and body products.
Coffee – Often added for exfoliation and its rich, earthy character in soap making.
Clays & Charcoal – Used in traditional soap making to add natural color and help create a clean, balanced feel on the skin.
We believe these ingredients reflect the beauty and usefulness found in creation, and we enjoy incorporating them into products with intention and care.

The name Garden & Sword Apothecary reflects both provision and strength. The “garden” represents the beauty and usefulness found in God’s creation — herbs, plants, oils, and the gifts of the earth that have been used for generations. The “sword” represents truth, protection, faith, and standing firmly in what is good and enduring.
Together, the name reflects the heart behind our business: creating intentional, natural products rooted in faith, stewardship, and timeless care.
